Building Bridges, Connecting Communities: Our Students' Impact in Eswatini

In March 2024, our outstanding civil engineering students partnered with the community in Eswatini, Africa, to complete a life-changing project—the construction of a pedestrian footbridge. While modest in scale, this bridge holds immense significance, especially during the rainy season, as it connects local communities to essential services like healthcare, education, grocery stores, and farming homesteads.

This project exemplifies the power of engineering to transform lives. The dedication and initiative displayed by our students from the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatics Engineering have been truly inspiring. Their collective efforts in project management, design, construction, and safety ensured that the bridge was built smoothly and efficiently, making a tangible difference in the lives of those it serves.

Meet the Leaders Behind the Project:

  • Project Manager: Alejandra Vega, Civil Engineering '24
  • Assignment Project Manager: Tyler Owen, Civil Engineering '24
  • Design Manager: Evan Cabrera, Civil Engineering '24
  • Construction Manager: Andrew Gates, Civil Engineering '24
  • Safety Manager: Claudia Diaz, Civil Engineering '24

We are incredibly proud of their commitment to engineering a better future and fostering a strong sense of community. This accomplishment is a powerful testament to their hard work, collaboration, and dedication to making a positive impact.
May the success of this annual project continue to inspire similar initiatives around the world, showcasing the incredible difference that engineering can make in the lives of others.
